How it works

How is the hourly rate calculated?

The calculator adds your annual overheads (van, insurance, tools, phone, etc.) to your desired salary, then divides by your annual billable hours. Billable hours are your working weeks multiplied by hours worked per week, minus a non-billable percentage for admin, quoting, and travel. This gives you the minimum hourly rate to cover costs and pay yourself.

What are billable hours vs working hours?

You might work 40 hours a week, but only 25-30 of those are billable — time you can charge to a customer. The rest goes on quoting, admin, travel between jobs, picking up materials, and bookkeeping. Most tradespeople overestimate their billable hours and end up undercharging.

Should I charge different rates for different jobs?

Yes. Emergency callouts, weekends, and specialised work should carry a premium. Use this calculator as your baseline — your minimum rate for standard work. Charge more for anything outside normal hours or requiring specialist skills.

What about materials?

This calculator gives you your labour rate. Materials should be charged on top, typically with a 15-30% markup to cover sourcing, storage, and the risk of returns. Graftie automates this — it applies your hourly rate to labour line items and adds materials separately.
